Clear Lens Extraction (CLE)

Presbyopia is a common age-related vision disorder occurring in our early to mid 40′s. The flexibility of the eye’s natural lens gradually dissipates making it difficult to focus our near vision.

The Clear Lens Extraction (also known as Refractive Lens Exchange) involves removing your natural lens and replacing it with a Multifocal lens implant. This lens can help correct nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism, and presbyopia.

Benefits of CLE:
  • Rapid recovery
  • Lasting results
  • Eliminates the need for cataract surgery in the future
  • Decreases the dependence on glasses and contact lenses

Who is a candidate?
In order to determine your candidacy for Refractive Lensectomy, Dr. Cassol will perform a comprehensive evaluation to determine the health of your eyes and make a recommendation about which intraocular lens implant (IOL) will provide the optimal postoperative vision for you.

Procedure
The procedure is similar to traditional cataract surgery and is performed at the Surgecenter of Louisville, an outpatient surgical facility. After instilling numbing drops and undergoing IV sedation, Dr. Cassol will make a tiny incision to remove the natural lens before a foldable artificial lens is inserted in place of the old lens.

The type of artificial lens implanted will dictate your vision following the procedure.

A Multifocal and Multifocal Toric lens provides 20/20 distance, intermediate, and near vision. The Multifocal lens we use has a 99.2% patient satisfaction rate.

A Toric single distance lens is designed to reduce or eliminate moderate to severe corneal astigmatism.

A Monofocal lens will require you to wear glasses after the procedure.

The procedure itself takes about 30 minutes. At the time of your procedure, a steroid and antibiotic will be injected in your eye. Following the quick procedure, you will go home to rest and return to the office for a post-operative check-up the next day.

Recovery
Temporary blurriness and light sensitivity are expected but visual recovery is usually fast and most patients return to normal activities the day after surgery.
